Upgrade Lync 2013 to Skype for Business – Step by Step

Skype for Business Server 2015 was released a few weeks ago, and now it’s time to upgrade from Lync 2013 to Skype for Business.

First of all: why should I upgrade my installation?

Here the reference to Technet with the new features and changes introduced with SfB Server2015:

There are not so many changes in the architecture: we have a new role for the interoperability with some Cisco devices (I’m curious to see how it works), support for SQL Server AlwaysOn ...

How to Map OnPrem Active Directory users to existing Office365 Users

In some cases it could happen that customers create accounts on Office365 and activate only in a second phase the synchronization with Active Directory.

The problem of this approach is that in some cases the O365 users will not be associated with the corresponding AD Accounts and the user must manage the accounts twice (separate passwords, etc.)

Dirsync will perform a “Soft Match” of the user ( ) but in some cases this will not work, for example if your cloud ...

Exchange Hybrid – Free/Busy not working between OnPrem and Office365

More than one of our customer opened tickets reporting that Free/Busy lookup between Cloud users and OnPrem Users has stopped working.
After checking the standard settings like autodiscovery, ews services, etc. is seems that this issue was related to the delegation trust and the token validation, maybe due some Microsoft “operations” or issues on their federation services.

In order to test this:

[PS] C:\Windows\system32>Test-FederationTrust -UserIdentity

Upgrade Lync 2010 to Lync 2013

Lync 2013 was released in RTM few days ago and I am going to update our internal Lync installation to the new release.

The supported upgrade process is side-by-side, this means:

  • install a new Windows 2008R2 or 2012 server
  • install Lync Server 2013 as new Pool
  • move users to the Lync 2013 pool
  • remove the Lync 2010 Server

For the complete migration procedure reference this link:

Migration preparation

Before upgrading we have to install the most up-to-date updates on our Lync 2010 deployment.

Integrate Lync OnPremise with Hosted Exchange – Part 1: IM and Presence

In the post I will describe the procedure to integrate Office365 Hosted Exchange with Lync installed OnPremise.

The reason to perform such configuration is that some Lync features (i.e. Enterprise Voice) are not available with Lync OnLine.

The final objective is to have Lync IM integrated in the Exchange OWA and use the Unified Messaging features.

As guideline look at:

Prerequisites for this configuration are:

  • Correctly configured Lync Infrastructure with Edge server published on Internet
  • Active Directory Federation
  • Exchange OnLine and some active accounts

In our ...

Sometimes executing the Exchange 2010 SP2 Hybrid Configuration Wizard you may encounter the error:

There error message is quite “generic” and find out where the problem can be is not so easy.
